Welcome to Cherry Class!
Meet our teaching team
Hi there and welcome to Cherry class. We are a kind, caring and supportive bunch who love to learn. Here on our class page, you will find out about a day in the life of a year 1 child at Mrs Bland’s, as well as the topics we will cover throughout the year.
Our mornings start with a challenge that we can start as soon as we arrive in school, this helps us to settle quickly and get started with our learning for the day. Monday to Thursday, we come together for collective worship as a school. This is a lovely time for us to sing together and celebrate the individuals in our school. On Fridays, we start our day by playing circle games on the playground followed by our class quiz.
After assembly, we have Phonics. Each day we learn how to say, read and write a brand new sound and then play games and complete activities to help the learning stick in our heads. We finish off phonics with a snack and story.
Next, we start English. Our teachers use colourful semantics to help us learn how to write exciting sentences and to use punctuation. We write stories, instructions and lots of other text types.
After breaktime, we have maths. Our favourite thing about maths is using resources like counters and tens frames to help us understand new learning. We spend lots of time working as a class and working in pairs before we work on our own. This helps us feel super confident in our learning.
We do lots of different lessons in the afternoons, but one thing always stays the same – our class story. Listening to our teachers read fun and exciting books is one of our favourite parts of the day.
Our afternoons are made up of science, geography, history, art, DT, music, PSHE and RE. As well as this, we are really lucky to take part in outdoor learning (forest school) once a week, where we learn basic survival skills. We also take part in specialist PE lessons once a week too.
We may work hard, but we are always cheery in Cherry Class!
Our topics throughout the year are:
Autumn 1 – Toys
Autumn 2 – Fairytales & Forest
Spring 1 – Space
Spring 2 – Animals
Summer 1 – Dinosaurs
Summer 2 – London

We suggest that the children bring in their PE kits and outdoor learning clothes on a Monday and are left in school for the week, just in case there are any changes.
PE kit includes; navy shorts, coloured PE t-shirt (ask your child’s class teacher which house they are in), navy tracksuit top and bottoms (essential for outdoor PE), spare socks, plimsolls or trainers and ear tape if needed.
Outdoor learning clothing includes; wellington boots, waterproof coat, and trousers.
Everyday essentials include; a book bag and water bottle. We encourage the children not to bring in big backpacks as we are limited on space in our cloakrooms.
Please ensure that all items are clearly named.
We always welcome and appreciate parental support with individual reading, outdoor learning and trips/visits so please do let us know if you would like to help regularly or even just occasionally. If you have any expertise related to any of our topics this year and you would like to share your knowledge with the children, we would be delighted to hear from you too.
Many thanks for your continued support.
Mrs Loupos-Read, Mrs Lambarth, Mrs Duly, Miss Hastings and Mrs Buchan
